The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday started its investigation into alleged criminal negligence leading to the Balasore train accident which claimed 278 lives after registering a first information report (FIR), officials said.
The accident involving three trains in Odisha's Balasore district has left over 230 people dead so far.
In Balasore, 178 villages in Baliapal block, 142 villages in Basta block, 127 villages in Jaleswar block and 120 villages in Bhograi block had been affected.
Odisha Police are investigating the purchase of petrol by a woman matching the description of a student who died by self-immolation after alleging sexual harassment. CCTV footage is being analyzed, and filling stations have stopped selling petrol in bottles. A UGC fact-finding team is also investigating the incident.
